PMA Membership Application
In 1808, Robert Mills, architect and prison reform advocate, was looking for someone to build the prison he had designed to implement his vision of reform. Burlington County needed a jail in Mount Holly to replace the 1760's county jail in Burlington. The two met. The result-the key step in prison design for reformatino represented by the Old Bulington County Prison, in use from 1811 until 1965, standing on High Street.
With the possible exception of our neighbor, Easter State Penitentiary, it is the most significant prison building in the United States. Please join us in preserving and promoting Mills' masterpiece.
